Invisible Fence Cost Calculator

In-ground, wireless or GPS dog fence — upfront, batteries and the physical fence it replaces.

A professionally installed in-ground dog fence costs about $2–$4 per foot of boundary, roughly $800–$1,700 for a quarter-acre lot. DIY kits run $150–$600, wireless systems $100–$600 and GPS collars $450–$1,300 per dog. This calculator prices your yard and sets it against a chain link or wood fence of the same length.

🛠️ How This Calculator Works

Uses your boundary length (or the perimeter of a square lot of the acreage you enter). In-ground pro installs are priced at $2–$4 per foot with an $800–$1,500 minimum; DIY kits at $150–$600 including 500 ft of wire plus extra rolls; wireless at $100–$600; GPS at $450–$1300 per dog. Each extra dog adds a $50–$150 collar, and battery collars cost $60–$100 a year each. Figures from Petful's July 2026 cost guide.

📐 Formula

Pro = max(minimum, ft × $2–$4) + extra collars · Ownership = upfront + years × dogs × battery cost

📝 Example Calculation

Quarter-acre square lot (417 ft boundary), one dog, pro in-ground: Upfront: $835 – $1,670 Batteries: $60 – $100 a year 5 years: $1,135 – $2,170 Same boundary in chain link: $12,114 – $18,751

💡 Pro Tips from Fence Builders

  • Walk the boundary with flags first: driveways, gates and garden beds decide where the wire can go.
  • Use a twisted (inactive) pair where the wire must cross to a front-yard loop, so the dog isn't corrected on the path.
  • Budget 2–4 weeks of short daily training sessions before trusting the boundary.
  • Test the collar and check the batteries monthly — a dead battery is the commonest way dogs get out.
  • Check HOA rules: some neighborhoods that ban physical fences allow in-ground pet fences.

Invisible fence cost by lot size (one dog)

0.5 acre590 ft$1,181 – $2,361$180 – $650$17,131 – $26,517
1 acre835 ft$1,670 – $3,339$180 – $650$24,227 – $37,501
2 acre1,181 ft$2,361 – $4,723$210 – $700$34,262 – $53,035

Square lots; a long, narrow lot has more boundary for the same acreage. In-ground prices are $2–$4 per foot installed (Petful, July 2026); chain link uses the Homewyse September 2026 national average the rest of this site uses.

Which kind of dog fence?

  • In-ground (wired): a buried boundary wire follows any shape you like, including around pools and gardens. The most reliable electronic option; a cut wire must be found and spliced ($200–$300 for a pro).
  • Wireless: a base unit indoors makes a circular boundary. No digging and it moves with you, but the circle can't follow a lot line and metal siding or slopes can distort it.
  • GPS collar: no wire and no base; you draw the boundary on a phone. Good for large or rural properties; accuracy is a few feet, so it's less suited to small yards near a road.
  • Physical fence: the only option that also keeps other dogs, wildlife and people out, and gives privacy. Price yours with the fence calculator, the chain link fence calculator or the fence cost calculator.

What adds to the bill

Extra collars for more dogs, a second zone for the front yard, crossing a paved driveway (the installer cuts the asphalt or concrete, or runs the wire through an expansion joint), and professional training packages. Battery collars need new batteries every three to four months — about $60–$100 a year per dog.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an invisible fence cost?

About $800 to $2,800 professionally installed for most yards — roughly $2 to $4 per linear foot of boundary, per Petful's July 2026 guide. A DIY in-ground kit is $150 to $600, a plug-in wireless system $100 to $600, and a GPS collar system $450 to $1,300 per dog.

How much does an invisible fence cost for 1 acre?

A square acre has about 835 ft of boundary, so a professionally installed in-ground system costs roughly $1,670 to $3,340 for one dog. A DIY kit for the same acre needs one extra 500 ft roll of wire: about $180 to $650. A chain link fence around the same acre would be about $24,200 to $37,500.

Is an invisible fence cheaper than a real fence?

Far cheaper to install: a quarter-acre lot is about $835 to $1,670 for a pro-installed invisible fence against roughly $12,100 to $18,750 for chain link and $13,300 to $21,500 for a wood privacy fence on the site's published per-foot prices. But it only contains a trained dog — it keeps nothing out and offers no privacy.

What does an invisible fence cost to run each year?

Mostly collar batteries: about $60 to $100 a year per collar, changed every three to four months. A lawn-care or digging accident that cuts the wire costs $200 to $300 to repair. GPS collars are recharged instead, though some brands sell an optional monthly plan.

How much is an invisible fence for 2 dogs?

Add a receiver collar for the second dog — $50 to $150 — to an in-ground or wireless system, plus another $60 to $100 a year in batteries. GPS systems need a full collar per dog, so two dogs is $900 to $2,600.

Do invisible fences work for every dog?

Not every dog. Strong-willed or prey-driven dogs may run through the correction when chasing something, and then won't come back through it. Training with boundary flags is essential; for escape artists or busy roads, a physical fence is safer.
