Barbed Wire Fencing Basics for Ranches
Strands, T-posts, corner braces, and staples for durable pasture fencing.
Standard cattle fence: 4 strands, 12" spacing on T-posts every 10–12 ft with wood corner braces every 660 ft (⅛ mile).
Wire
Galvanized 4-point barbed wire on 1,320 ft spools. Class 3 galvanization lasts 30+ years in dry climates.
Posts
6 ft or 7 ft T-posts for line, treated 4×6 or 6×6 for corners and gates. Full list at Chain Link Calculator and Barbed Wire Calculator.
Bracing
H-brace at every corner, gate, and 660 ft along the line. Without it, tension pulls posts inward within a season.
