Horse Fence Calculator
Posts, rails and materials for paddocks and pastures.
Horse fencing is a different job from a backyard fence — the fence has to be visible, forgiving on impact and tall enough to discourage leaning. Enter your perimeter and style to get the material counts and a cost estimate.

🛠️ How This Calculator Works
Divides the perimeter by post spacing for the post count, then converts total rail footage into 16 ft boards, 100 ft no-climb rolls or 656 ft electric tape rolls depending on the style you pick.
📐 Formula
Posts = ⌈perimeter ÷ spacing⌉ + 1 · Boards = ⌈(perimeter × rails) ÷ 16⌉📝 Example Calculation
800 ft paddock · 3 board rails · 8 ft spacing Posts = 101 Boards = (800 × 3) ÷ 16 = 150 At $14/ft ≈ $11,200
💡 Pro Tips from Fence Builders
- Never use barbed wire for horses. It's the single most common cause of serious fence injuries in equine practice.
- Mount boards on the inside of the posts so a horse leaning on the fence pushes against the post, not the nails.
- 4 ft 6 in to 5 ft is the standard height for horses; ponies can go 4 ft, and stallions or jumpers want 5 ft to 6 ft.
- No-climb 2x4 woven mesh is the safest option for foals — the openings are too small for a hoof to pass through.
- Run a hot top wire or a strip of electric tape along the top rail. It stops cribbing and doubles the life of the boards.
- Brace every corner with an H-brace. A corner that pulls loose takes the whole run with it.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
How tall should a horse fence be?
54 to 60 inches for most horses, measured to the top rail. Add height for stallions, jumpers and any paddock next to a road.
What's the safest horse fencing?
Wood board, vinyl rail and 2x4 no-climb woven wire are the safest widely-used options. High-tensile smooth wire with a visible top rail is acceptable; barbed wire is not.
How much does horse fencing cost per foot?
Roughly $10–$18 per foot for board, $18–$28 for vinyl rail, $7–$12 for no-climb mesh, and $2–$4 for electric tape in materials.
How far apart should horse fence posts be?
8 feet is standard for board fencing. Go to 10–12 feet only with mesh or high-tensile systems that carry tension between braced ends.
