Fence Post Depth Guide by Height & Climate
How deep to set posts based on fence height and frost line.
The 1/3 Rule
Bury 1/3 of total post length. A 6 ft fence = 9 ft post, 3 ft buried.
Frost Line Override
In northern states, you must dig below the frost line — sometimes 48" deep in Minnesota, upstate NY, or the Dakotas.
Always Add Gravel
6" minimum at the bottom for drainage. Skipping this is the #1 reason posts rot at the base.
Once you know the depth, calculate concrete with the Concrete Calculator and post counts with the Fence Post Calculator.
Hand-Digging vs Power Auger
Under 10 holes: a fiberglass-handle manual digger is fine. Over 10 or in clay/rock: rent or buy a power auger. See Best Post Hole Digging Tools.
