Prices the new fence at national installed rates per linear foot for the material you choose, scaled by height, then adds removal labor for the old material, a disposal fee sized to the job, and each gate. Reusing sound posts takes about a fifth off the new materials and some labor.

What a fence replacement quote is made of
A replacement is two jobs priced together: taking the old fence down and building a new one. The new fence is the big number, and it is priced the same way as any new fence — material per linear foot plus installation labor, scaled for height, plus gates. The tear-out is the part people forget. Pulling panels and pickets is quick; the time goes into the posts, and posts set in concrete have to be dug or jacked out one by one. Then the whole lot has to go somewhere, which means a trailer and landfill fees or a dumpster.

Signs it is time to replace rather than repair
- More than a quarter of the posts are soft at the ground line or leaning.
- Rails are rotten where they meet the posts, so new pickets would have nothing solid to fix to.
- The fence is past its expected life: roughly 15–20 years for pressure-treated pine, 20–30 for cedar or vinyl.
- You want a different height or material anyway, or the fence is not on your side of the property line.

Ways to bring the price down
Do the tear-out yourself: it is unskilled work, and at $3–$7 a foot it is one of the easiest parts of the job to take on. Reuse posts only where they are genuinely sound and in the right place. Keep the same line and height so the permit, if you need one, is simple. And get at least three quotes that each list removal, disposal, gates and permit separately so you are comparing the same job.
