How Much Does It Cost to Fence an Acre?
Fencing one acre costs about $1,700–$4,200 for field or wire fencing, $10,000–$21,000 for 4 ft chain link and $18,000–$33,000 for 6 ft wood privacy, based on the roughly 835 ft around a square acre.
Acreage does not translate to fencing in a straight line. Doubling the size of a lot does not double the fence — it only adds about 41% more perimeter. That is why fencing five acres costs far less per acre than fencing a quarter-acre suburban yard, and why the shape of your parcel matters as much as its size.
Not sure how many acres you have? Get it from the lot's dimensions with the acreage calculator. The table below assumes a square parcel, which is the shortest possible perimeter for a given area. A long, narrow lot of the same acreage can need 30 to 60% more fence. For your exact boundary, run the numbers through the acreage to linear feet calculator, then price the material with the cost to install a fence calculator.
Linear feet of fence per acre
| Lot size | Perimeter (square lot) | Wire fence installed | Chain link installed | Wood privacy installed |

| 40 acres | 5,280 ft | $10,560–$26,400 | $63,360–$132,000 | $116,160–$211,200 |
| 100 acres | 8,348 ft | $16,696–$41,740 | $100,176–$208,700 | $183,656–$333,920 |
Perimeter assumes a perfectly square parcel. Installed ranges are 2026 contractor planning figures and exclude gates, clearing and permits.
Cost per foot by material
| Material | Installed $/ft | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Field / woven wire | $2–$5 | Livestock and acreage boundaries |
| Barbed wire (5 strand) | $1.5–$4 | Cattle pasture, cheapest per foot |
| Chain link, 4 ft | $12–$25 | Security without privacy |
| Split rail, 3 rail | $12–$24 | Decorative boundary marking |
| Wood privacy, 6 ft | $22–$40 | Only practical on small lots |
| Vinyl privacy, 6 ft | $30–$60 | Highest upfront, lowest upkeep |
Why bigger lots cost less per acre
Perimeter grows with the square root of area. A one-acre square is 835 ft around; a hundred-acre square is only 8,350 ft — a hundred times the land for ten times the fence. In practice that means the fence bill per acre drops sharply as you scale up, which is why an acreage owner can afford wire fence around the whole property while a suburban owner pays more to enclose a quarter of an acre in wood.
Shape changes everything
A square acre needs 835 ft of fence. The same acre as a 100 ft × 436 ft strip needs 1,072 ft — 28% more for identical land. Before you budget, walk the actual boundary or measure it on a plat map rather than trusting an acreage figure. The linear footage calculator handles irregular runs section by section.
What the table leaves out
- Gates. A farm gate runs $200–$700 installed; you will want at least two on any acreage fence.
- Clearing. Brush and tree removal along the fence line runs $1–$4 per foot on wooded boundaries.
- Corner braces. Each H-brace on a wire fence costs $75–$200 in posts and labor — see the woven wire fence calculator.
- Terrain. Rock, slope and creek crossings can add 25–50% to labor.
- Permits and surveys. A boundary survey before fencing acreage costs $400–$1,200 and is cheaper than moving a fence later.
Frequently asked questions
How much fence do I need for 1 acre?
A square acre has a perimeter of about 835 linear feet. Irregular or narrow parcels of the same acreage commonly need 1,000 to 1,200 ft, so measure the real boundary before ordering.
How much does it cost to fence 1 acre?
Around $1,700 to $4,200 for field or wire fencing, $10,000 to $21,000 for 4 ft chain link, and $18,000 to $33,000 for 6 ft wood privacy, based on an 835 ft square perimeter.
How much does a fence cost for half an acre?
A half-acre square is about 590 ft around. Expect roughly $1,200 to $3,000 for wire, $7,000 to $15,000 for chain link, and $13,000 to $23,500 for a 6 ft wood privacy fence.
How much does it cost to fence a quarter acre?
A quarter-acre square runs about 417 ft of fence — roughly $5,000 to $10,400 in chain link and $9,200 to $16,700 in 6 ft wood privacy. This is the most common suburban backyard size.
How much does it cost to fence 5 acres?
About 1,867 ft of perimeter. Field fence lands near $3,700 to $9,300, which is why almost every 5 acre property uses wire rather than wood.
How much does it cost to fence 10 acres?
Roughly 2,640 ft, or half a mile of fence. Budget $5,300 to $13,200 for woven wire with braced corners and two gates.
How much does it cost to fence 100 acres?
About 8,350 ft — a mile and a half. Barbed or woven wire runs roughly $12,500 to $42,000 depending on strand count, terrain and how much brush has to be cleared first.
How many linear feet is an acre?
An acre is 43,560 square feet, not linear feet. As a square it measures 208.7 ft per side, giving an 835 ft perimeter. Any other shape has a longer perimeter for the same acreage.
What is the cheapest way to fence acreage?
Barbed wire on T-posts at $1.50 to $4 installed per foot, followed by woven field fence. Both rely on properly built wood H-braces at corners — skip those and you will be restretching the fence every season.
Is it cheaper to fence a square or rectangular lot?
Square, always. For any given area, a square has the shortest possible perimeter of any rectangle, so it needs the least fence and the fewest posts.
