Woven Wire / Field Fence Calculator

Rolls, posts, braces and staples for farm and field fencing.

Woven wire fence is sold in 330 ft and 100 ft rolls and relies on braced corners rather than heavy line posts. This tool counts rolls, line posts, corner and brace posts, staples and optional barbed strands for your run.

🛠️ How This Calculator Works

Divides the run by your roll length for roll count, by your line post spacing for post count, adds two brace posts per corner or gate assembly, and estimates one staple per strand per post plus 10% spares.

📐 Formula

Rolls = ⌈run ÷ roll length⌉ · Line posts = ⌈run ÷ spacing⌉ · Brace posts = corners × 2

📝 Example Calculation

1,320 ft (quarter mile) · 12 ft spacing · 330 ft rolls · 8 strands Rolls = 1,320 ÷ 330 = 4 Line posts = 1,320 ÷ 12 = 110 Corners = 4 → 4 H-braces, 8 brace posts Staples ≈ 110 × 8 × 1.1 = 968

💡 Pro Tips from Fence Builders

  • T-posts at 12 ft is the standard for cattle on flat ground. Tighten to 8–10 ft for sheep, goats and rolling terrain, and open up to 16–20 ft only on high-tensile wire with stays.
  • Every corner, gate and change of direction needs a full H-brace built from wood posts — T-posts cannot hold tension and will lean within a year.
  • Buy the roll length that matches your run. A 330 ft roll weighs 200+ lb; two people and a tractor or a roll carrier make the difference between a morning and a whole day.
  • Run a single barbed strand along the top to stop cattle leaning, and a second at the bottom if you have digging predators.
  • Stretch woven wire with a come-along against a braced corner, never against a truck bumper. Over-stretching pops the crimps that let the fence flex.
  • Class 3 galvanizing lasts roughly three times longer than Class 1 in wet climates — worth the premium on any fence you expect to outlive a decade.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How far apart should woven wire fence posts be?

Twelve feet on center is the standard for cattle on level ground. Go to 8–10 ft for sheep and goats, tighter still over dips and rises, and only stretch to 16–20 ft if you are running high-tensile wire with stays between posts.

What is the correct field fence post spacing?

Field fence follows the same rule as woven wire: 12 ft between line posts, with wood posts at every corner, gate and 660 ft of straight run to re-anchor tension.

What is high tensile fence post spacing?

High tensile wire holds tension across much longer spans — 20 to 30 ft between posts with fiberglass or plastic stays every 8 to 10 ft. The braces do the work, so build them heavy.

How far apart are cattle fence posts?

Twelve feet for woven wire and 12 to 16 ft for barbed wire with cattle. Cattle push and lean, so closer is always safer near water, feed and gates where they congregate.

How many rolls of field fence do I need?

Divide your total run by the roll length — 330 ft is the common farm roll, 100 ft the hardware-store roll. A quarter mile of fence is 1,320 ft, or exactly four 330 ft rolls.

How many T-posts per roll of fence?

At 12 ft spacing a 330 ft roll takes about 28 T-posts. At 8 ft spacing it takes 42. Add the wood corner and brace posts separately — those are never T-posts.

How much does woven wire fencing cost per foot?

Materials run roughly $2.00 to $3.50 per foot for standard field fence with T-posts, and $4 to $7 per foot installed by a contractor. Corner braces, gates and rough terrain push the installed number higher.

Do I need a brace at every corner?

Yes, and at every gate opening and every end. A single H-brace made from two wood posts and a horizontal rail, wrapped with a twitched wire, is what holds all the tension in the run.

What is the difference between woven wire and field fence?

They are the same product in everyday use. Woven wire describes the construction, and field fence is the common name for the graduated-mesh version sold for livestock.

How tight should woven wire be stretched?

Pull until the tension curves in the horizontal wires flatten to about half their original bend. Fully straight crimps means you have over-stretched it and the fence has no give left for a leaning animal or a fallen branch.

What height woven wire fence do I need?

Cattle 47 to 49 inches, horses 54 to 60 inches with no-climb mesh, sheep and goats 39 to 47 inches with a small 4x4 inch mesh, and deer exclusion 8 ft. Match mesh size to the animal, not just height.
