Electric Fence Setup Guide for Livestock

Chargers, wire, insulators, and grounding rods for a reliable electric fence.

An electric fence is 90% grounding, 10% wire. Skip the ground rods and nothing else matters.

Sizing the Charger

Rated in joules (output) and miles (distance). Small paddock: 0.5 J. 20-acre pasture: 4+ J. Solar chargers work great in remote spots.

Wire Options

Poly-wire (visible, easy), high-tensile steel (long-lasting), or poly-braid (temporary paddocks).

Insulators & Grounding

Insulators for wood posts, T-posts, and corners. Minimum 3 ground rods, 6–8 ft long, spaced 10 ft apart.

❓ Frequently asked questions

What size electric fence charger do I need?

Size on joules rather than the advertised mileage, because the mile rating assumes a clean fence with no vegetation touching it. As a working rule, allow one joule per mile of fence for livestock that respect the fence, and more for dense wire runs, heavy vegetation or animals that test it.

How many ground rods does an electric fence need?

At least three, each six to eight feet long, spaced about ten feet apart and clamped together with insulated wire. Poor grounding is the single most common reason an electric fence reads a strong voltage at the charger and gives almost no shock at the wire.

How high should electric fence wires be?

It depends entirely on the animal. Cattle are usually two or three strands with the top around nose height. Horses want a visible tape rather than thin wire. Small livestock and predators need a low bottom wire close to the ground, which is exactly the wire vegetation will short out first.

Why is my electric fence not shocking?

In rough order: bad grounding, vegetation touching the wire, a broken or corroded connection, an insulator cracked so the wire is earthing on the post, or a charger too small for the run. Test with a fence tester at the charger and then at intervals along the run to find where the voltage drops.

Can I use electric fence wire on wooden posts?

Yes, but always through insulators. A wire stapled straight to a wooden post will earth through the post as soon as the wood is wet, which in practice means every morning with dew on it. Insulators are cheap and are the difference between a fence that works and one that does not.
