Composite vs Wood Fence
Composite fencing costs roughly twice what a pressure-treated wood fence costs and promises that you will never stain anything again. Whether that trade is worth it depends almost entirely on how long you plan to own the house — and on being honest about whether you would actually have maintained the wood.
Composite vs Wood at a glance
| Factor | Composite | Wood |
|---|---|---|
| Installed cost per linear foot | $45–$80 | $22–$35 pressure-treated, $30–$45 cedar |
| Upfront cost, 150 ft | $6,750–$12,000 | $3,300–$6,750 |
| 20-year maintenance cost, 150 ft | Under $400 in cleaning | $1,200–$2,500 in stain and labour |
| Approximate 20-year total | $7,100–$12,400 | $4,500–$9,250 |
| Lifespan | 25–30 years, most carry long warranties | 15–20 years pressure-treated, 20–30 cedar |
| Appearance over time | Slight initial fade, then stable | Silvers within a year if left unfinished |
| Surface heat in sun | Gets noticeably hot on dark colours | Stays cooler |
| Repairs | Board colours may no longer match after a few years | Any lumber yard board, stained to match |
| Weight and handling | Heavy — a two-person job | Manageable solo |
| Look and feel | Uniform, engineered | Real grain and variation |

Choose composite if…
- You are staying in the house long enough for the maintenance savings to matter — roughly fifteen years and up.
- You genuinely do not want to spend a weekend staining every few years, and you know yourself well enough to admit it.
- You want a consistent colour that will not need matching later.
- The fence is short enough that the price premium is a few hundred dollars, not a few thousand.
Choose wood if…
- Budget is the constraint — wood buys twice the fence today.
- You may sell within a decade; the resale premium for composite over cedar is small.
- You want the option to change colour later. Wood re-stains; composite is what it is.
- You want a fence you can repair with a board from any lumber yard on a Saturday morning.
The verdict
Composite wins on twenty-year maths, but not by as much as the marketing suggests — cedar maintained on schedule ends up in the same neighbourhood, and it costs half as much on day one. Buy composite because you want to stop maintaining a fence, not because you expect it to be cheaper.
