๐Ÿ› ๏ธ How This Calculator Works

Divides fence length by your target spacing, rounds up to whole sections, then divides back to give the actual spacing per section.

๐Ÿ“ Formula

Actual spacing = fence length / โŒˆlength / target spacingโŒ‰

๐Ÿ“ Example Calculation

100 ft fence, 8 ft target spacing: Sections = โŒˆ100/8โŒ‰ = 13 Actual = 100 / 13 = 7.69 ft on center

๐Ÿ’ก Pro Tips from Fence Builders

  • Fence post spacing chart โ€” maximum on-center distance by type: wood privacy 8 ft, horizontal board 6 ft, vinyl panel 6 or 8 ft (panel width exactly), aluminum panel 6 or 8 ft, chain link residential 10 ft, chain link commercial 8 ft, split rail 11 ft (rail length), farm and field fence 12 ft, T-post line fence 8 to 12 ft, electric fence 25 to 50 ft.
  • Vinyl and aluminum are not adjustable โ€” the panel width sets the spacing exactly, so measure post to post center, not edge to edge.
  • Chain link allows 10 ft because the mesh carries tension between terminal posts, but drop to 8 ft on anything over 6 ft tall or in high wind.
  • Always go with even spacing โ€” uneven sections look amateur.
  • Tighter spacing = stiffer fence. Don't exceed 8 ft for wood, 10 ft for chain link.
  • Account for gates first, then divide remaining run evenly.
  • Corners, ends and gate posts do not count toward spacing โ€” set those first, then divide each straight run between them.

โ“ Frequently Asked Questions

Why isn't my spacing exactly 8 ft?

Because fences rarely divide evenly. Pick the closest target and let the calculator give you the exact on-center spacing.

What is standard fence post spacing?

8 ft on center is the standard for wood privacy fence, since rails and pickets are sold to suit it. Chain link goes to 10 ft, horizontal board should stay at 6 ft, and panel fences must match the panel width exactly.

What is chain link fence post spacing?

10 ft on center maximum for residential chain link, 8 ft for commercial or anything over 6 ft tall. Terminal, corner and gate posts are set first and the line posts are divided evenly between them.

Is post spacing measured center to center?

Yes, always on center. Measuring edge to edge throws every section off by the post width, which compounds into a visibly short last section.

Can I space fence posts 10 feet apart on a wood fence?

Not recommended. Standard rails are sold in 8 and 16 ft lengths, and a 10 ft span will sag under the picket weight within a couple of seasons.

How far apart should T-posts be?

8 ft for tight woven wire or livestock fence, up to 12 ft for light field fence on flat ground. Add a wood brace assembly at every corner and every 660 ft of straight run.

What is woven wire fence post spacing?

Twelve feet on center is standard for cattle on level ground, tightening to 8 to 10 ft for sheep, goats and rolling terrain. Corners and gates always get wood H-braces, never T-posts.

What is high tensile fence post spacing?

High tensile wire holds tension across 20 to 30 ft spans with fiberglass stays every 8 to 10 ft between posts. All the load sits on the end braces, so build those heavy and deep.

What is field fence post spacing for cattle?

Twelve feet for woven field fence and 12 to 16 ft for barbed wire. Tighten to 8 ft anywhere cattle congregate โ€” around water, feed bunks and gate openings.

What is steel or metal fence post spacing?

Steel line posts on chain link go up to 10 ft on center residential and 8 ft commercial. Steel T-posts on wire fence follow the livestock spacing above rather than the chain link rule.

How far apart should 4x4 fence posts be?

8 ft on center is the standard, because rails and panels are manufactured for that span. Drop to 6 ft for horizontal board fences, tall 8 ft privacy fences, or anywhere exposed to constant wind.

What is barbed wire fence post spacing?

Twelve to 16 ft between T-posts with five strands, closer on slopes and curves. Use a stay or twisted wire between posts on long spans to keep the strands evenly separated.
