🛠️ How This Calculator Works

Counts panels by dividing length by panel width, adds end and gate posts, then totals materials and labor.

📐 Formula

Panels = ⌈length / panel width⌉

📝 Example Calculation

150 ft, 6 ft panels at $220, posts at $65, 1 gate at $450, $18/LF labor: Panels = 25; Posts = 25 + 1 + 2 (gate) = 28; Concrete = 44 × 80 lb bags Materials = $5,500 + $1,820 + $264 + $450 = $8,034; Labor = $2,700 Total = $10,734 ($71.56/LF)

💡 Pro Tips from Fence Builders

  • Composite costs 2× wood upfront but breaks even at 10–15 years.
  • Buy a brand with at least a 25-year color warranty.
  • Use specified composite-rated post brackets — wood brackets void warranty.

Composite fence cost by length

Worked with this calculator's default prices — $220 per 6 ft panel, $65 per post, 80 lb concrete bags at $6, and $18 per foot labor. Swap in your supplier's prices above for your own figure.

Fence lengthPanelsPostsTotal, no gateTotal, 1 gatePer foot
50 ft910 (12 with gate)$3,626$4,224$73 – $84
100 ft1718 (20)$6,878$7,476$69 – $75
150 ft2526 (28)$10,136$10,734$68 – $72
200 ft3435 (37)$13,685$14,283$68 – $71
300 ft5051 (53)$20,195$20,793$67 – $69

The per-foot price falls as the run gets longer because the end post and gate are spread over more feet. A gate adds two posts and the gate itself — about $600 at these prices.

Composite vs wood fence cost

Installed rates for a 6 ft fence on flat ground, from the fence installation cost calculator, with typical lifespans:

MaterialMaterials / ftLabor / ft150 ft installedTypical lifeCost per year
Pine (pressure-treated)$12$12$3,60015 yr$240
Cedar$20$14$5,10025 yr$204
Vinyl$22$14$5,40030 yr$180
Composite$32$16$7,20030 yr$240

On purchase price alone composite costs about twice pine. What closes the gap is upkeep: a wood fence needs stain or sealer every few years — price it with the fence staining cost calculator — while composite needs only a wash. The full side-by-side is on the composite vs wood fence page.

How to calculate composite fence materials

  1. Panels: fence length ÷ panel width, rounded up. Most composite systems come in 6 ft or 8 ft sections.
  2. Posts: one per panel plus one to finish the run, plus two for each gate. Corners use a corner post in the same count.
  3. Concrete: a 10 in hole 30 in deep around a 5 in post takes about 0.93 cu ft — 1.6 eighty-pound bags per post. Check post depth for your frost line with the post depth calculator.
  4. Hardware: use the brackets and post sleeves the panel maker specifies; generic wood brackets usually void the warranty.

For a wood fence instead, the wood fence calculator counts pickets, rails and posts, and the fence cost per foot calculator compares every material on one screen.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Is composite fencing worth it?

Yes if you plan to stay 10+ years — zero maintenance, no fading, no splinters, lasts 25–30 years.

Can composite fence panels expand?

Yes — leave 1/8 inch expansion gaps per manufacturer specs to prevent buckling in heat.

How much does a composite fence cost per foot?

Roughly $35 to $75 per linear foot installed, depending on the brand, height and how much of the work you hire out. This calculator's defaults ($220 per 6 ft panel, $65 posts, $18 per foot labor) land at about $68 per foot for a 150 ft run with no gate and $72 with one gate. The site's install cost calculator uses a lower-end $48 per foot for a 6 ft composite fence ($32 materials, $16 labor).

How many composite panels and posts do I need?

Divide the run by the panel width and round up for panels, then add one post for the end and two for every gate. A 150 ft fence in 6 ft panels takes 25 panels and 26 posts; add a gate and it is 28 posts. Each 10 by 30 inch hole holds about 0.93 cubic feet of concrete around a 5 inch post, roughly 1.6 eighty-pound bags.

Is a composite fence cheaper than wood?

Not up front. At 6 ft tall the install cost calculator puts pine at about $24 per foot, cedar $34 and composite $48, so a 150 ft run is about $3,600, $5,100 and $7,200. Spread over a typical 15, 25 and 30 year life that is roughly $240, $204 and $240 a year — before the staining and board replacement that wood needs and composite does not.
