Installation that departs from the manufacturer's instructions is the big one — wrong post spacing, too little concrete, rails pinned so they cannot expand. After that: staining or painting a product not meant to be coated, pressure washing above the stated limit, and damage from impact or storm, which is an insurance matter rather than a warranty one.
Sometimes, often only once, and usually only if the transfer is registered within a window after the sale. Warranties that are not transferable are worth nothing to a buyer, so check before you use one as a selling point. Keep the original receipt and installation records either way.
Usually the material against manufacturing defects, not the installation and not the appearance. Fading is commonly covered only against a stated threshold and often on a prorated basis, meaning the payout falls year by year. Read what is prorated — that is where a lifetime warranty turns into a partial credit.
Many vinyl and composite warranties do, but against a defined limit rather than any visible change, and usually prorated. A fence that has simply weathered evenly over ten years will rarely qualify. A panel that has faded dramatically against the ones beside it is a much stronger claim.
Not always, but the instructions have to be followed exactly either way, and some manufacturers do require a certified installer for the full term. If you are installing it yourself, photograph the post holes, the concrete and the spacing as you go — that record is what settles a disputed claim.
