Chain Link Fence Cost Per Foot
Price chain link the way suppliers price it โ by the foot.
Chain link pricing turns on three things: height, mesh gauge and whether the fabric is galvanized or vinyl-coated. Set those and see the per-foot material cost, per-foot labor and full project total.

๐ ๏ธ How This Calculator Works
Starts from a 4 ft galvanized baseline, adds for every foot of extra height, multiplies for heavier 11 or 9 gauge mesh and for vinyl coating, then layers in labor (unless you're doing it yourself) and gate hardware.
๐ Formula
Per foot = base(height) ร gauge factor ร coating factor + labor rate๐ Example Calculation
150 ft ยท 4 ft tall ยท 11 gauge ยท galvanized ยท installed Materials โ $6.60/ft ยท Labor โ $7.00/ft Total โ $2,220 including one walk gate
๐ก Pro Tips from Fence Builders
- Gauge counts down: 9 gauge is thicker and stronger than 11.5 gauge. Residential yards are fine on 11 or 11.5; kennels and commercial need 9.
- Vinyl-coated black mesh visually disappears against a treeline and never leaves rust streaks โ worth the premium on a front yard.
- Terminal posts (ends, corners, gates) are heavier and pricier than line posts. Count them separately when you order.
- Rent or buy a fence puller. Hand-stretched fabric always sags within a season.
- A top rail stiffens the whole fence; tension wire alone is cheaper but flexes when kids and dogs lean on it.
โ Frequently Asked Questions
How much does chain link fence cost per foot in 2026?
Installed, most homeowners pay $12โ$25 per foot for 4 ft galvanized and $18โ$35 per foot for 6 ft vinyl-coated. DIY materials alone typically run $6โ$14 per foot.
Is chain link the cheapest fence?
Per foot, yes โ it's the lowest-cost durable fencing available and it lasts 20โ25 years galvanized. It just offers essentially no privacy without slats.
How much do privacy slats add?
Slats typically add $4โ$9 per foot in materials and take about an hour per 20 feet to weave in. They also add wind load, so posts need to be well set.
What gauge should I use for dogs?
11 gauge is fine for most dogs. For large breeds that jump or chew, use 9 gauge with a top rail and a bottom tension wire.
How do I estimate the cost of a chain link fence?
Multiply your run length by the per-foot material price for your height and gauge, add $8 to $16 per foot for labor if you are hiring out, then add gates and corner hardware separately. This calculator does all four steps from your own numbers.
How does the Everbilt chain link calculator compare?
Everbilt and the big-box estimators price their own catalog and assume standard 10 ft post spacing with galvanized fabric. They are accurate for their kit, but they do not let you change gauge, coating or labor rate โ set those here first, then take the quantities to the store.
What does chain link fence cost at Home Depot or Lowe's?
Big-box fabric is usually the cheapest per foot for 4 ft galvanized, but posts, top rail, tension bars, bands and caps are all sold separately and typically add 60 to 90% on top of the fabric price. Always price the complete parts list, not the roll.
How much is 100 ft of chain link fence installed?
Roughly $1,200 to $2,500 for 4 ft galvanized and $1,800 to $3,500 for 6 ft vinyl-coated, including posts, hardware and labor. One walk gate adds about $150 to $350.
Is it cheaper to install chain link yourself?
Yes, dramatically. Labor is typically 50 to 60% of a chain link bill, and the hardest part โ stretching the fabric โ needs only a come-along and a fence puller bar you can rent for a day.
What is the cost difference between galvanized and vinyl-coated?
Vinyl-coated fabric runs about 25 to 40% more per foot. It lasts longer in coastal and pool environments and looks better in black, which is why most residential jobs now specify it despite the premium.
