Cedar vs Pressure-Treated Wood for Fences

Rot resistance, cost, and lifespan of cedar vs pressure-treated pine posts and pickets.

Every wood fence project starts with one decision that shapes cost, lifespan, and look: cedar or pressure-treated pine? I've built with both across dozens of jobs. The right answer depends on how long you plan to own the property, how much you're willing to spend, and whether you actually want to see wood grain in ten years. Here's the full side-by-side for 2026.

1. Western Red Cedar

Cedar's rot resistance comes from natural oils called thujaplicins, plus a tight, straight grain that sheds water. It doesn't warp as aggressively as pine when it dries and doesn't twist as much on posts.

Pros: Beautiful grain and color new (warm reddish-brown), silvers gracefully if unstained, holds semi-transparent stain better than any other species, lightweight so it's easy on your back over an 8-hour build day.

Cons: Expensive. Regional pricing varies wildly β€” cedar in Portland is half the price of cedar in Miami. Not rated for ground contact, so cedar posts in dirt rot in 8–10 years unless deeply treated. Soft β€” dents from a hammer strike or a kid's baseball.

Cedar Grades to Know

  • Clear grade β€” no knots, near-perfect appearance. 3–4Γ— the price of standard grade. Overkill for a fence.
  • Select tight-knot (STK) β€” small tight knots allowed. The sweet spot for fence pickets β€” knotty rustic look, β…“ the price of clear grade.
  • Standard/utility grade β€” larger knots and some cupping. Cheapest cedar option; fine for stained fences where the stain hides minor imperfections.

2. Pressure-Treated Pine

Southern yellow pine or Douglas fir chemically treated in a pressure vessel with copper-based preservatives (copper azole is standard since CCA was phased out for residential use in 2003). The wood is impregnated with rot- and insect-killing chemicals throughout its thickness.

Pros: Cheap. Available at every hardware store. Ground-contact rated with the "UC4A" (general ground contact) or "UC4B" (severe/tropical ground contact) stamp, so it's the correct choice for fence posts. Extremely rot-resistant when properly rated.

Cons: Comes to the store wet β€” often 30–40% moisture content. Warps and twists during the first month as it dries. Green-brown color that most people either paint over or stain solid to hide. Splinters more than cedar.

Reading the Treatment Stamp

Every piece of PT lumber has a stamp indicating treatment level. This matters more than most homeowners realize:

  • UC3B β€” Above ground, exposed. Fine for pickets and rails.
  • UC4A β€” General ground contact. Correct for buried fence posts.
  • UC4B β€” Heavy/severe ground contact (wet climates, freshwater exposure). Best for humid Southeast and coastal installs.
  • UC4C β€” Saltwater / commercial. Overkill for a fence.

Using UC3B lumber for buried posts is why so many DIY fences rot at year 6. Always check the stamp.

3. The Best of Both Worlds (What Most Contractors Do)

The industry-standard combination in most of the US:

  • Posts: Pressure-treated pine, UC4A or UC4B rated. Handles ground contact and moisture where cedar rots.
  • Rails: Pressure-treated pine. Cheaper and structurally identical to cedar for the horizontal load.
  • Pickets: Western red cedar. The visible face of the fence β€” gets the premium wood.

This combo runs about 25–35% cheaper than an all-cedar fence and lasts as long as, or longer than, either species alone. Stain everything to match β€” a solid-body stain hides the color mismatch and unifies the look. See Fence Staining Trends.

4. When to Pick Cedar Only

  • High-visibility fence β€” front yard, curb appeal.
  • You plan to leave it unstained and let it silver naturally.
  • Warm dry climate where cedar posts don't touch consistently wet ground.
  • Budget isn't the primary driver.

5. When to Pick PT Pine Only

  • Tight budget β€” PT is 30–50% cheaper.
  • Fence will be painted or solid-stained (grain doesn't matter).
  • Very wet climate where cedar's advantage fades.
  • Utility fencing (backyard, dog run) where looks are secondary.

6. Alternatives Worth Knowing

  • Redwood β€” Cedar's West Coast cousin, similar performance, similar price.
  • Cypress β€” Common in the South, decent rot resistance, slightly cheaper than cedar in that region.
  • Modified wood (thermally modified pine) β€” Newer product, chemical-free, cedar-like performance. Pricier but zero chemicals if that matters to you.
  • Composite pickets β€” See Composite Fence Calculator for a maintenance-free wood alternative.

My Recommendation

For most homeowners in most climates: PT posts and rails, cedar pickets, solid-body stain matched to whatever house trim color you have. This is what pros install. It's the longest-lasting per dollar spent and looks premium once finished.
