DIY vs Hiring a Fence Contractor

Cost, time, and quality breakdown of doing it yourself vs hiring out.

DIY Pros

Save 40–60% on labor. Total control over quality. Learn a real skill.

DIY Cons

2–4× longer. Tool rental costs. Risk of mistakes on layout, plumb, or gate hardware.

Verdict

DIY for short runs (under 100 ft). Hire out for long perimeters or sloped terrain. Model both with our Materials Cost Calculator.

Safety Matters More Than Speed

A dropped 4×4 or a slipped chisel can end your weekend. Basic PPE is cheap insurance — see Fence Safety Gear Guide.

❓ Frequently asked questions

How much can I save building a fence myself?

Broadly the labour share, which on most fence jobs is roughly half the quote. The honest caveats are that it takes several weekends, you will still pay for the permit, and the two parts where mistakes are expensive — post depth and keeping the line straight — are the two a first-timer is most likely to get wrong.

How long does it take to build a fence yourself?

For a typical residential run, plan on one weekend for layout and setting posts, a wait for the concrete to cure, then another weekend or two for rails, pickets and gates. Digging is the part people underestimate, especially in clay or rocky ground where an auger stalls and you end up on a bar and spoon.

What fence jobs should I not do myself?

Anything where the fence has to be structurally certified, anything on a disputed property line before a survey, and pool barriers where the self-closing and self-latching requirements are inspected. Rocky or root-bound ground is also worth handing over — a contractor with a powered auger will do in a morning what takes a weekend by hand.

How do I compare fence contractor quotes fairly?

Convert every quote to a cost per linear foot and make sure each one covers the same scope: post depth and diameter, concrete, rail count, gate hardware, tear-out of the old fence and disposal. A quote that is notably cheaper is usually shallower posts, two rails instead of three, or lighter gate hardware.

Do I need a permit if I build the fence myself?

Yes — permits attach to the work, not to who does it. Building without one risks a stop-work order, a retroactive permit at a higher fee, and a problem at sale time when the work shows up as unpermitted. The application is usually a site plan and a modest fee.
