How long should I wait before staining a new fence?

For kiln-dried lumber, a few weeks. For wet pressure-treated boards straight from the yard, wait until the wood is dry enough to absorb — commonly several months. The sprinkle test settles it: flick water on the boards and if it beads rather than soaking in, the wood is not ready.

How many coats of fence stain do I need?

One for penetrating semi-transparent stains, because a second coat mostly sits on the surface and will peel later. Two for solid stains and paints, which are film-forming and depend on film thickness. Very dry, thirsty wood is the exception: apply the second coat while the first is still wet.

How much stain do I need for a fence?

Work on roughly 150 to 200 square feet per gallon on rough fence boards, not the 300 to 400 the label claims for smooth timber. Remember a fence has two faces — if you are coating both, double the area. Buy the extra gallon rather than run out mid-run and leave a lap mark.

Can I stain a fence with a sprayer?

Yes, and it is far faster on a long run, but spraying alone leaves an uneven film. Spray it on and immediately brush or roll it in — back-brushing is what pushes stain into the grain and gets an even colour. Mask anything nearby; overspray carries further than you expect.

How often should a fence be restained?

It depends on the product, not the calendar. Clear water repellents need doing annually, semi-transparent stain every two to three years, and solid stain every three to five. The south-facing side always fails first, so judge the schedule by that face rather than the whole fence.
